Porcelain Crowns

Also known as "caps," crowns are covers that are placed over the root of your natural tooth. A crown helps to preserve the structure of your tooth while creating a natural-looking replacement for a damaged tooth. Porcelain is the preferred material due to its strength, durability and natural appearance.
Crowns may be needed due to:

  • Breakage caused by accidents
  • Disease
  • Medication that weakens enamel
  • Overly large fillings that have weakened the tooth
  • Root canal
  • Cosmetic improvement

Procedure
Implementing a crown usually requires at least two appointments. The dentist will take a mold of your tooth in its current form so that the dental lab can prepare the crown to match and fit in with your other teeth. A temporary crown may be attached until the permanent fixture is ready.

Dr. Pohlman will prepare your tooth by removing any damaged portions and creating a base to which the new crown will be attached. In your next appointment, the temporary crown is removed, the surface of the tooth is cleaned and the new permanent crown is cemented in place with a special dental adhesive which sets almost immediately. The dentist will then examine the spacing, position and bite to make sure that your new crown is performing properly.

Before you go home, Dr. Pohlman will provide you with proper care instructions for your new crown ensuring the longevity of your Big Happy Smiles.
